Statement on Junta Airstrikes in Rakhine State

Chiang Mai, Thailand (January 10, 2025) The Chin Human Rights Organization (CHRO) unequivocally condemns the brutal airstrikes carried out by the Myanmar junta in Rakhine State on Wednesday, January 8, 2025. These attacks, which claimed the lives of at least 40 civilians and injured dozens more, are yet another stark example of the junta’s ongoing and indiscriminate violence against civilian populations. Our deepest condolences go out to the victims and their families, and we stand in full solidarity with all those affected by this atrocity.

“This attack is yet another example of the junta accelerating its use of indiscriminate violence against civilians, marking a horrific escalation in their campaign of war crimes on an industrial scale. Over the past four years, the CHRO has documented the deaths of 116 and injuries of 242 Chin civilians from nearly 1,000 separate airstrikes targeted at civilian populations. The increased use of airstrikes, particularly on civilian infrastructure, has coincided with the junta’s territorial losses in Chin State,” said CHRO’s Executive Director, Salai Za Uk Ling.

The junta’s actions continue to brazenly defy international law, and swift, coordinated action is urgently required to end this cycle of impunity.

We call for the immediate diplomatic and political isolation of the junta, along with comprehensive and effective economic sanctions, to ensure accountability for those responsible and to bring an end to the violence. The international community must stand united in safeguarding the lives and dignity of Myanmar’s civilian population.
